Happy Fall—Lots of New Stuff!

Things haven’t slowed down yet around here—we’re just in pumpkin spice overdrive.

New Stuff

Salvage Rat, by Larry N. Martin, is now live! Think, Bonnie and Clyde meet V for Vendetta in a Firefly-esque universe.

Star Force pilot and hero Wyatt McCoy left his medals and career behind after the Rim Wars, disillusioned and bitter when he learns the truths behind the conflict. He takes his converted gunship, the Nellie B, and heads to the Near Fringe, salvaging derelict ships and abandoned stations and mining colonies. Dr. Beth Parker is a space archeologist, documenting the history of planetary expansion and colonization for Kalok Enterprises and the Interplanetary Mining Group. A piece of alien technology embeds itself in Beth’s arm, giving her the ability to see the energy impressions of long ago people and events. When Beth uncovers proof of genocide that could bring down the big mining companies, she’s the target of assassins. Wyatt makes a split-second decision to intervene, launching them both into a high-stakes cat-and-mouse game with some of the most powerful organizations in the system. They can prove Kalok and Interplan killed millions—but can they live long enough to tell their story? Read it here in ebook, print and audiobook: http://a.co/d/92ucYLi

Close Encounters, the newest Mark Wojcik monster hunter (New Templars) novella is out from Falstaff Books!

There’s a drunk werewolf passed out on his porch, a monster mistaken for a mammoth stalking the nearby woods, zombies at an abandoned sanitarium, and his niece has been kidnapped by a haunted hotel that makes the Overlook resemble the Waldorf Astoria. For Mark Wojcik, it’s just another week in the wild backwoods of Pennsylvania. Grab it here in print and ebook: http://a.co/d/iY2mnhm

The Dark Road, the second Jonmarc Vahanian Adventure collection, is also live!

Jonmarc Vahanian fled from the raiders and monsters that killed his family, but when danger dogs his steps once again, he leaves the traveling caravan that gave him shelter to become a mercenary in nearby Principality. His fighting skills help him rise through the ranks, and draw the attention of a Nargi general—and the general’s undead mage. An old, unsettled score turns deadly, trapping Jonmarc in dangerous intrigue. He can save himself—and betray everything he holds dear—or die a hero as the raider’s curse holds true. Get it in ebook and print: http://a.co/d/5NPD2Q9

One hundred years ago, a sheriff’s posse killed dark warlock Rhyfel Gremory, but his witch-disciples escaped, and their magic made them nearly immortal. Seth uncovers a cycle of ritual murders that feed the witch-disciples’ power, and he saves Evan Malone, one of the warlock’s potential victims. Neither Seth nor Evan expected to fall in love, but when the dust settles, they find themselves on the run and on the road together, tracking the next killer. Fate and danger threw them together. Summer Update and a Fun Contest

Vengeance is out! It’s the sequel to Scourge (which won the Manly Wade Wellman award for NC spec fic), and Corran, Rigan and their outlaw friends have fled beyond the walls of Ravenwood City, hunting monsters and trying to stay out of the clutches of the guards! They thought they stopped new monsters from coming through, only to discover that there’s a much bigger conspiracy and they’re in way over their heads!

Tangled Web is the third Deadly Curiosities novel, and it’s action-packed! When a malicious weaver-witch awakens the spirit of an ancient Norse seoir warlock and calls to the Wild Hunt, Cassidy, Teag, and Sorren—and all their supernatural allies—will need magic, cunning, and the help of a Viking demi-goddess to survive the battle and keep Charleston—and the whole East Coast—from becoming the prey of the Master of the Hunt.

Deep Trouble is the third Mark Wojcik Monster Hunter novella (in the Spells, Salt and Steel universe). Mark Wojcik fights a dragon, has a battle of wits with the ghost of Mad Anthony Wayne, and even takes on the infamous Pig People of Radio Tower Hill, but when the angry spirits from a bloody mine disaster come looking for vengeance, Mark knows he’s in deep trouble.

Coming soon!

Sons of Darkness, a new dark urban fantasy series set in Pittsburgh. Demon-hunting former priest Travis Dominick works with the misfit psychics of the Night Vigil to fight supernatural creatures and malicious paranormal activity. When a series of disappearances, suicides and vengeful spirits cause havoc and death along a remote interstate highway, Travis teams up with former special ops soldier and monster-hunter Brent Lawson to end the problem with extreme prejudice. (September)

Salvage Rat, a new space opera by Larry N. Martin! Think Bonnie and Clyde meet V for Vendetta in a Firefly-esque universe. (September)

Also, Assassin’s Honor, my new buddy flick epic fantasy. Imagine Butch and Sundance as medieval assassins! (October)

New from my alter-ego, Morgan Brice!

As Morgan Brice, I write Urban Fantasy MM Paranormal Romance. Here’s what’s new!

Witchbane: Seth Tanner uncovers a cycle of ritual killings that feeds the power of a dark warlock, and he’s hell bent on stopping Jackson Malone from becoming the next victim. He’s used to risking his neck. He never intended to risk his heart.

Badlands: Medium and clairvoyant Simon Kincaide owns a Myrtle Beach boardwalk shop where he runs ghost tours, holds seances, and offers private psychic readings, making a fresh start after his abilities cost him his lover and his job as a folklore professor. Jaded cop Vic D’Amato saw something supernatural he couldn’t explain during a shootout several years ago in Pittsburgh and relocated to Myrtle Beach to leave the past behind, still skeptical about the paranormal.  But when the search for a serial killer hits a dead end, Vic battles his skepticism to ask Simon for help. As the body count rises, Simon’s involvement makes him a target, and a suspect. But Simon can’t say no, even if it costs him his life and heart

Awesomecon and Ravencon were wonderful, and now that I’m home, we’re back to getting more books out to satisfy story-hungry readers!

Watch for Tangled Web (Deadly Curiosities novel #3) to come out very soon, in ebook/print and in audiobook!

Also coming soon from Falstaff Books is Deep Trouble, our third Spells, Salt, and Steel Mark Wojcik monster hunter adventure. Mark’s gone up against plenty of big bad creatures and cryptids, but never like this! Mark Wojcik fights a dragon, has a battle of wits with the ghost of Mad Anthony Wayne, and even takes on the infamous Pig People of Radio Tower Hill, but when the angry spirits from a bloody mine disaster come looking for vengeance, Mark knows he’s in deep trouble!

So this year, we’ve got all kinds of goodies….coming attractions on new series, a few teasers about the upcoming Warhammer original novel, a sneak peek at Vengeance (sequel to Scourge), and news about the new Deadly Curiosities novel and new Iron & Blood novel planned for 2018!

And of course, the links to fun excerpts of my stuff and some of my friends’ books because what’s Halloween without Trick-or-Treat goodies!

Have you read the newest stuff!

Grab Bump in the Night fast—it’s a limited-edition book bundle that’ll be gone faster than your Halloween candy! Nine full-length spooky novels for $2.99! And it’s a great way to get my Trifles and Folly collection of 10 Deadly Curiosities short stories for a great price!

Haven Harbor HalloweenFour novellas, only .99 for a limited time. They all have connections to Jeanne Adams Haven Harbor universe, which features mysteries in a town settled by the descendants of witches who fled Salem to avoid the Trials back in the day. My story is Keepsakes, a Deadly Curiosities novella where a string of bizarre murders—all linked to stolen cursed items—have Cassidy, Teag and Sorren trying to stay one jump ahead of a killer.

Spells, Salt and Steel: A New Templars Novella. This is the first in a series co-written with Larry N. Martin and set tangentially in John Hartness’s Bubba The Monster Hunter universe. It’s comedic horror starring Mark Wojcik, mechanic and monster hunter, in the wilds of Northwestern Pennsylvania. Here’s the first line: “When all else fails, the ass end of a carp makes a damn fine weapon.”

The Hunt: A Storm and Fury Novella. Department of Supernatural Investigation agents Mitch Storm and Jacob Drangosavich are back for more Steampunk adventures. People have vanished and part of the Adirondack Forest is missing. Are aliens or airships to blame?

Unraveled: A Deadly Curiosities Novella. Charleston’s restless spirits turn dangerous as a ghostly serial killer returns for a new murder spree. Cassidy, Teag and Sorren must outwit an undead entity that kills for thrills and find what tethers his spirit to the city to stop the bloodshed before Teag becomes the next victim.

Hawthorn Moon Tour 2017–Monsters, Airships and Smugglers

Welcome to my annual Hawthorn Moon blog tour! The name comes from a holiday celebrated on the Solstice in my Chronicles of the Necromancer series, and the idea just stuck. It’s become the season to unveil new cover art, talk about new books and upcoming new releases, and explore ideas in guest blog posts on blogs around the world!

The big news….

Scourge, the first book in my new Darkhurst epic fantasy series, comes out from Solaris Books July 15!

What’s Scourge about? Here’s the short answer: Three undertaker brothers in a medieval trading town battle monsters to protect their family and neighbors, only to discover that the monsters have masters and the stakes are higher than they dreamed.

Here’s the book cover answer: In a city beset by monsters, three brothers must find out who is controlling the abominations and stop the carnage. Corran, Rigan, and Kell Valmonde are Guild Undertakers, left to run their family’s business when guards murdered their father and monsters killed their mother. Their grave magic enables them to help souls pass to the After and banish vengeful spirits. Rigan’s magic is unusually strong and enables him to hear the confessions of the dead, the secrets that would otherwise be taken to the grave. When the toll exacted by monsters and brutal guards hits close to home and ghosts expose the hidden sins of powerful men, Corran, Rigan and Kell become targets in a deadly game and face a choice: obey the Guild, or fight back and risk everything.

And here’s the Hollywood pitch summary: Supernatural meets Game of Thrones.

So there you have it–medieval monster hunters! Be sure to check out the excerpts I’ll be posting with many of the blog tour links!

Other News

IMG_0090We’ve got a trio of new Steampunk stories in the Storm & Fury Adventures (extra episodes in the Iron & Blood world): Ghost Wolf, Ruin Creek and Lagniappe! Werewolf vigilantes, skinwalkers and weird West aliens and the curse of a pirate’s ghost–these stories have it all!

Jonmarc Vahanian fans–his story is now complete! If you’ve been following the serialized journey of everyone’s favorite brigand lord, the tale is now complete with Death Match, Guardian and Smuggler! These three novellas take the action up to about five years before the beginning of The Summoner! (Will I ever write more smuggling tales? Maybe!)

What’s Coming Up!

IMG_0028Salvage Rat, new space opera series by Larry N. Martin, will debut later this year. If you cross Bonnie and Clyde with V For Vendetta in a Firefly-esque universe, you’re on the money!

Spells, Salt and Steel–Larry and I team up to write this brand new series loosely set in John Hartness’s Bubba the Monster Hunter ‘verse. Mechanic Mike Wojcik and an unlikely group of helpers battle monsters, urban legends and homicidal deer in the wilds of Western Pennsylvania. Coming in October.

A Deadly Curiosities novella tied in with the world of Jeanne Adam’s Haven Harbor witchcraft series in an all-new anthology! Look for it at Halloween!

Hath No Fury, an anthology about kick-ass female characters from Ragnarok Press featuring an origin story for Kestel Falke from my Ascendant Kingdoms Saga.

The Assassins of Landria–If Butch and Sundance were medieval assassins, they would roll like this. An epic fantasy buddy flick series filled with dark magic, betrayal and action. Coming later this year.

A Terrific Tie-In I Can’t Talk about Yet! Watch for an announcement in late summer about this brand new media tie-in series coming in 2019

The final three Blaine McFadden Adventures–Arctic Prison, Ice Bound and Cold Fury told the story of Blaine’s years as a convict. Watch for three new novellas in early 2019 that recount his years as a colonist!

There’s more, including plans to start writing the seventh Chronicles of the Necromancer book (beginning a new six-book series seventeen years after The Dread), new novels in the Deadly Curiosities and Iron & Blood series, and three more new series I can’t talk about yet! Subscribe to my email update, and you’ll never miss a new release!

Ready for Beach Reading!

Can you believe it’s almost summer? And for those of us on the con circuit–can you believe it’s almost time for Balticon and ConCarolinas?

We’ve been busy coming up with lots of choices for your summer beach reading!

Scourge: A Novel of Darkhurst comes out July 15! This is the start of a brand new series from Solaris Books, and I’m really excited to share it with you!

Here’s the description: In a city beset by monsters, three brothers must find out who is controlling the abominations. The city-state of Ravenwood is wealthy, powerful, and corrupt. Merchant Princes and Guild Masters wager fortunes to outmaneuver League rivals for the king’s favor and advantageous trading terms. Lord Mayor Ellor Machison wields assassins, blood witches, and forbidden magic to assure that his powerful patrons get what they want, no matter the cost.

Jonmarc Vahanian fans! His epic journey wraps up in Death Match, Guardian and Smuggler–now on Kindle, Kobo and Nook! Put all the short stories and novellas together, and you have three serialized novels that show you how Jonmarc becomes the man you meet in The Summoner! (And don’t forget–the first 10 short stories plus a bonus story are collected in The Shadowed Path, which is available in both print and book!)

Steampunk addicts! Two new Storm and Fury Adventures for your reading pleasure are now available on Kindle/Kobo/Nook! Ghost Wolf and Lagniappe continue the adventures of Mitch Storm and Jacob Drangosavich as they deal with pirate ghosts in New Orleans and a vigilante werewolf in New Pittsburgh.

As you probably know if you follow me on Twitter, I’m a big Supernatural fan. I’ve been invited to do two guest blog posts about the season on WinchesterFamilyBusiness.com, and have been asked to consider doing more over the summer hiatus. You can read them here and here.

Also did a fun interview with Keystroke Media on books, publishing and life, listen here.

Keep an eye out for my Hawthorn Moon blog tour coming in late June! And watch for me at upcoming conventions including Balticon, ConCarolinas, LibertyCon, ConGregate, GenCon, DragonCon and Atomacon!

#HoldOnToTheLight—Sci-Fi and Fantasy Authors Blogging for Mental Wellness

holdontothelight-fb-banner

What happens when more than 75 sci-fi and fantasy authors start a conversation about mental wellness, mental illness, depression, suicide prevention, domestic violence intervention, PTSD treatment and related issues?

We don’t know, but we’re going to find out.

#HoldOnToTheLight is a blog campaign encompassing blog posts by fantasy and science fiction authors around the world in an effort to raise awareness about treatment for depression, suicide prevention, domestic violence intervention, PTSD initiatives, bullying prevention and other mental health-related issues. We believe fandom should be supportive, welcoming and inclusive, in the long tradition of fandom taking care of its own. We encourage readers and fans to seek the help they or their loved ones need without shame or embarrassment.

Among the authors participating so far are: Robin Hobb, Jody Lynn Nye, Cat Rambo, Seanan McGuire, Laura Anne Gilman, Chuck Gannon, Kameron Hurley, Catherine Asaro, Gaie Siebold, Karen Miller, Rowena Cory Daniels, David B. Coe, Marc Tassin, Jonathan Oliver, Jeanne Adams, Nancy Northcott, Aaron Rosenberg, Jennifer St. Giles, Mark Van Name, Juliet McKenna, Jennifer Brozek, Darynda Jones, Christopher Golden, Clay and Susan Griffith, Gregory Wilson, Josh Vogt, Darin Kennedy, Jon Sprunk, James Maxey, Karen E. Taylor, Justin Gustainis, Misty Massey, John G. Hartness, Gail Z. Martin, Jean Marie Ward, Jaym Gates, Laura Taylor, Weston Ochse, Ron Garner, Kathy Lyons, Mari Mancusi, Leanna Renee Hieber, Davey Beauchamp, Cheryl Wilson, Rod Belcher, Travis Heermann, Cara Santa Maria, Mike Allen, Joshua Palmatier, Mindy Mimudes, Emily Leverett, Nicole Givens Kurtz, Tera Fulbright, Tamsin Silver, Stuart Jaffe, Danielle Ackley-McPhail, Eric Asher, Rick Gualtieri, Chris Kennedy, Ken Schrader, Samantha Dunaway Bryant, Valerie Willis, Alexandra Christian, Jake Bible, Matthew Saunders, Jay Requard, Vonnie Winslow Crist, Kelly Harmon, Sascha Illyvich, Kelly Swails, Bishop O’Connell, Sherwood Smith, Peter Prellwitz, Tracy Chowdhury, Trisha Wooldridge and more.

These authors will be posting a #HoldOnToTheLight blog either on their own blogs or as a guest blogger during September or October. I’ll be adding every post to a master list, but I encourage you to go to the authors’ sites and comment, like and share their posts to show your interest.

From the massively positive response to recent convention panels dealing with real-life mental health issues, we know this is a topic that resonates with fans. We also know from experience that readers identify with the struggles our characters face related to PTSD, depression, survivor guilt, and other related challenges. And most of us know first-hand what it’s like to wrestle with our own shadows.

September/October are the months for Depression Awareness, Suicide Prevention, Bullying Prevention, Traumatic Brain Injury Awareness, World Mental Health Day and Domestic Violence Awareness.

What’s our end game? We want to bring the issues, struggle and treatment out of the shadows and make it clear that no one is alone in the journey. We want to demonstrate fandom taking care of its own. And we want fandom to be a safe space for everyone.

The steering group behind #HoldOnTotheLight is made up of John Hartness, Jaym Gates, Jean Marie Ward, Emily Leverett, Mindy Mymudes and me.

How can you help? Share, retweet and engage with the blog posts and social media outreach about the campaign and by the participating authors to spread the word. Encourage the conventions you participate in to add or expand panels on mental wellness. Learn more about the issues, so you can be an educated participant in the discussion.

If you want to get even more hands-on, please consider donating to or volunteering for organizations dedicated to treatment and prevention such as: American Foundation for Suicide Prevention, Home for the Warriors (PTSD), National Alliance on Mental Illness (NAMI), Canadian Mental Health Association, MIND (UK), SANE (UK), BeyondBlue (Australia), To Write Love On Her Arms and the National Suicide Prevention Hotline.

Together, we can #HoldOnToTheLight because #FandomTakesCareOfItsOwn.
